My Pregnancy Diet

Milkshakes, peanut butter and spinach dip. These are just some of the things I’ve had insane cravings throughout my pregnancy.

I thought the second I got pregnant I would have the weirdest cravings. You know the ones that media always presents, pickles and ice cream or peanut butter and cheese sandwiches. But, that definitely hasn’t been my experience.

I’ll admit I don’t eat the healthiest. Oh sure, I don’t hate vegetables and fruit, I’m just lazy so I always go for the easiest thing to make and eat.

I wish I could tell you that changed when I became pregnant but it really hasn’t. I am eating healthier but I still wouldn’t say I’m the pinnacle of health either. I’ve had to make some modifications because I am trying to lower my sodium but that doesn’t magically mean I’m eating salads at every meal either. Having constant nausea from 4 weeks until about 20 weeks pregnant and having it start up again in the third trimester PLUS being low sodium PLUS being gluten-free PLUS general pregnant cravings have also added an interesting mix into my diet.

Here’s the lo down of what I’ve been eating throughout my pregnancy.

First Trimester

The first trimester was a daily struggle because it seemed like I craved very specific foods and hated everything else on the daily. It made grocery shopping and meal preparation very difficult. For example, the day that I left for Ontario I had an insane craving for salt and vinegar chips, it’s the only thing I ate that day and I haven’t touched them since.

What I craved

  • Spinach Dip
  • Curry
  • Flaming Hot Cheetos
  • Beef
  • Melon
  • Garlic
  • Strawberry Milkshakes
  • Popsicles
  • Hummus
  • Mayonnaise
  • Broccoli

What I Hated

  • Cheese
  • Crackers
  • Chicken
  • Bread
  • Avocado
  • Oatmeal
  • Eggs
  • Bananas
  • Mexican food
  • Salad

Calming Nausea During Pregnancy

  • Strawberry Ensure
  • Peanut Butter Lara Bars
  • Melons – watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew
  • Chocolate almonds

Weirdest Food Combinations

  • Breakfast sausage with maple syrup, mashed potatoes and creamed corn. (I actually don’t think this is weird. This is a childhood favourite but people always seem to think it’s a weird combination.)

Typical Day of Eating

One single food for the entire day. I definitely ate an entire giant watermelon in one day.

Second Trimester

The experts say morning sickness should stop once you hit the second trimester BUT for me it really didn’t until I was halfway through my second trimester. I also had to make sure I ate every two hours or I would get nauseous.  I wasn’t quite as picky as the first trimester but I was still pretty specific in my likes and dislikes. Eating became tricky because I was eating low sodium BUT I was just happy to have morning sickness be pretty much gone.

What I craved

  • Cheese
  • Greek yogurt
  • Milk
  • Avocado
  • Roasted vegetables
  • Peanut butter and jam
  • Dark chocolate
  • Hummus
  • Smoothies
  • Pizza
  • Poutine
  • Broccoli
  • Pears

What I hated

  • Eggs were still iffy.

Calming Nausea During Pregnancy

  • Oatmeal
  • Avocado
  • Bananas
  • Mashed potatoes

Weirdest Food Combinations

  • Grilled vegetable, cream cheese, cheddar and hummus sandwiches.

Typical Day of Eating

Variety started to come back into my diet. Breakfast always was oatmeal with a banana and a greek yogurt on the side. Lunch was always a sandwich alternating between grilled vegetables and peanut butter and jam with a chocolate milk, greek yogurt and fruit. Dinner was usually chicken with vegetables.

Third Trimester

The beginning of the third trimester was fantastic. I’m now starting to feel nausea and heartburn because of my shrinking stomach and growing uterus which means I’m eating smaller meals more frequently and trying to stay away from spicy or acidic foods(orange juice is my exception!) I’m also trying to up my iron intake because I have low iron so I’m eating more beef, chicken, spinach and oatmeal.

What I craved

  • Spinach dip
  • Oranges
  • Milk
  • Orange Juice
  • Bananas
  • French Toast
  • Chocolate Milkshakes
  • Sour candy
  • Cereal
  • Smoothies
  • Oatmeal
  • Granola bars

What I Hated

  • So far nothing that I didn’t already hate before pregnancy.

Calming Nausea During Pregnancy

  • Cereal with milk
  • Granola bars

Weirdest Food Combinations

  • Pulled pork poutine

Typical Day of Eating

Breakfast is usually cereal with milk and fruit, either a banana or an orange. Lunch is always leftovers. Dinner has been us back to eating our regular meals of chicken curry, taco salad, soup and sandwiches or breakfast for dinner.

So there ya have it, my diet in a nutshell. I wish I could eat healthier but for now I’m being controlled by a 4ish pound baby who I’ve never met. Baby gets, what baby wants.

So tell me, what did you crave or hate during pregnancy? What’s your favourite food combination that people seem to hate? Did you eat better when you were pregnant or did you let your cravings dictate what you ate?
