When my sister-in-law was pregnant with my niece two years ago, it was a great time of joy for my entire family. She was the first grandchild for my parents and the first great grandchild for my grandparents, it was an awesome excuse to buy all the itty bitty clothing and anything she may need.
It was established pretty quickly that my sister would be the “handmade aunt”. My sister has an amazing ability to create things, so she quickly started knitting sweaters, creating cute headbands and building wooden gifts for her, even before she was born. I’m not what some may call “crafty” so I knew I couldn’t follow in my sister’s footsteps. I would have to figure out what type of “aunt” I was supposed to be.
A few weeks before the baby shower for my niece and sister-in-law I was in my local bookstore, just looking for books for myself and they had a display of the best books for babies first library and then it hit me. I could be the “Book Aunt”.
Books have always been an escape for me, allowing me to travel to small towns, big cities and middle earth all without having to leave my bedroom. I could give my niece the world, all through the books she reads.
I’m sure my niece will quickly figure out that for every Christmas, birthday, Easter or just because, her gift from me will be books, but more than that I will always give the gift of learning.
Currently, I have a Pinterest board that has over 100 books that I think she’ll enjoy. Some are books that I enjoyed as a kid like The Mitten or Something From Nothing and others are newer books that have great stories that will show my niece the world like Meerkat Mail or We’re Sailing Down the Nile.
Becoming the “book aunt” has allowed me to bond with my niece in an age-appropriate way with the ultimate end goal of instilling a love of adventure and learning for my niece. I can’t wait to see where she goes with books.
So tell me, if you have niece’s and nephew’s what type of “aunt” are you? What are your favourite books for kids? To gift or to read out loud to your kids?
