Listening is more than just being in the same room as your spouse as they are talking.
“The quieter you become, the more you can hear” – Unknown
Don’t tell The Mister but I’m far from perfect, and the one thing I struggle with his listening, like REALLY listening. Oh sure, I do love what he has to say but I get distracted easily and I have about 6 different thoughts running through my head at any given moment so shutting those thoughts off while I’m listening to them is something I still struggle with but I’m getting better at!
Luckily for me, listening is a skill set that anyone can learn. Here are 3 vital listening skills that will help you in your marriage:
1. Avoid distractions like phones and turn and look directly at them.
2. Relay back in your own words what you are hearing.
3. Try and understand your spouse’s point of view.
Chances are you’ve learned many of these listening skills and are using them in your workplace or in your friendships. Having an awesome marriage that lasts means being committed to listening just as well at home as you do elsewhere. The best part? The rewards are even greater!
Would you say you listen to your spouse? Tell me why or why not? Do you use these techniques to truly listen to your spouse or do have any other tips for REALLY listening, let me know in the comments!
Next up, making time! Don’t miss it on Thursday November 26th!
