5 Things Never to Say to High School Sweethearts

5 Things Never to Say High School Sweethearts

In my hometown, high school sweethearts are quite common but that doesn’t stop us from getting a range of reactions when people hear that we’ve been together since we were 15. Some comments are super sweet and others not so much. Here are just some of the questions I’ve heard over the years!

1. Aren’t you afraid you’ll get sick of each other?
The simple answer is no. The more complicated answer is, if I was going to get sick of him, I’m sure it would have happened by now and it hasn’t.

2. Don’t you wish you dated more people?
I feel like the luckiest lady in the world that I met and started dating The Mister at such a young age. For me, although not ALWAYS true, it just means MORE time spent with him in the grand scheme of life. Who wouldn’t want to have MORE time with their spouse?

3. If you’ve never dated anyone else, how do you know they’re “the one”?
Technically, I think anyone could make a marriage work if they were both 100% committed but I feel that he’s “the one” because of the way he makes me feel. Plain and simple. When I’m with him, I know I’m loved.

4. What happens if you grow apart?
If we didn’t grow apart between high school and college or college and adulthood which were some of the biggest times in growth, I’m fairly certain it won’t happen.

5. Do you ever fantasize about other people?
I’m not a robot, of course I fantasize about other people. It’s the whole not acting out on those fantasies with other people other than your spouse that isn’t acceptable in a marriage.

If you’ve been with your spouse since high school or just a long time what things are you tired of hearing?

  1. It’s so funny, I hear some of these same dumb questions with regards to getting married young! I was 21 when we tied the knot. “You haven’t been together for a long time, how do you know you won’t get sick of each other?” “Don’t you wish you dated more people? You’re so young!” Haha. I think it’s great being high school sweethearts or marrying young, you have the chance to grow together and be with each other longer 🙂

    1. Sadly, I’ve heard every single one of them! I think people forget that everyone is on their own journey and that people can have different ideas about what’s right for them.
