I Said No to a “First Look”

It seems like these days EVERYONE is doing a first look. Everyone wants a gazillion photos so it make sense to get them over with before the ceremony and then you also get some time together calming each other’s nerves down before the ceremony. So then why did we (alright, alright, this is ONE thing I didn’t let The Mister have an opinion on) choose to see each other for the first time as I was walking down the aisle?

For one, I wanted that moment. You know that moment. That moment when your groom sees you for the first time looking about as beautiful as you’re ever going to look, walking down the aisle towards him. He’s got about 1 minute to put that memory deep into his brain so that 50 years later he still can vividly remember what you looked like as you are walking towards him down the aisle.

While planning our wedding I was obsessed with the photos of grooms seeing their brides for the first time but especially this one:

The second reason we chose to do it the “traditional” way was I wanted that natural “glow” in our pictures. You know the glow if you’ve ever run a marathon or spoken in front of a large audience without passing out. I wanted that natural “high” of happiness to shine through in our photos.

The third reason and really the least of my worries was that we didn’t have to be ready super early!

I’ve just told you the reasons as to why we didn’t do a first look, so now you’re probably wondering if it lived up to everything I’d hoped for. The answer is a resounding YES!

My favourite photo by far! This was made all the better since I actually didn't see his reaction until we were practically beside each other because I chose not to wear my glasses.

Now that I’ve told you what we did and why, it’s your turn! Tell me, did you have a first look or go traditional?

  1. Elyse, your site is fantastic! Andrew is so cute! I’m not a huge first look advocate either, I just think the focus needs to stay on the couple (not the photographer – haha!)
